The Super Chron Flight Brothers are back! Deleted Scenes is a prelude to Cape Verde, which is the official follow-up to their 2007 debut Emergency Powers. The mixtape is full of brand-new Super Chron tracks, remixes and unreleased exclusives. There is even a sneak peak at some new Billy Woods solo material. Cape Verde was originally slated for release this fall but now that the release date is set as 2/23/10, we felt like we owed the fans something to hold them over.

As far as Willie Green is concerned, it’s all about the drums. The New England-bred beatmaker puts that theory to the test on his debut album …Of Heroes & Villains, dropping on July 28th (today!) through Backwoodz Studioz. A half-hour instrumental adventure, …Of Heroes & Villains is the first official look at a producer who is poised to make a lot of noise in 2009 and beyond.

Willie Green made his name in the Boston underground scene as a producer and engineer before moving to Brooklyn in mid 2007. He has worked with unknowns and knows and soon-to-be-knowns alike, building up a resume of collaborators that includes Vordul of Cannibal Ox, Reks, the Super Chron Flight Brothers, Naledge of Kids in The Hall, Masai Bey and Boston fixtures Foundation Movement, among others. Shortly after Green began collaborating with the Super Chron Flight Brothers, Backwoodz Studioz was so impressed they invited him to take on some in-house production duties. As it stands, he co-produced the forthcoming Flight Brothers album, Cape Verde, and is hard at work on a one-producer/one-emcee project with Hi-Coup.

…Of Heroes & Villains is born out of Willie Green’s childhood love of cartoons. In his words, the premise of this instrumental narrative is “the ultimate battle between good and evil.  He-Man vs. Dangermouse’s Baron Silas Greenback”. The album pairs Green’s agile beatmaking with a keen ear for samples pilfered from some of his favorite cartoons. As an extra bonus, Green has included two exclusive non-album tracks featuring billy woods of SCFB and Nasa of The Presence, respectively.

But before all that, Willie Green was making a name for himself in the Boston indie scene. So we included a short interview to get you more familiar with the man behind the beats and don’t forget to check out episode 2 of the trailer.

What is your music background?

As far as a “traditional” music background, I’ve played drums for the past 18 years, mostly funk, jazz and reggae, and went to a pretty prestigious music school for record production and engineering.  I got my first drum machine and keyboard when I was 10 years old, I used to take two tape decks and record back and forth on them, adding layers to make beats.  Hopefully those tapes don’t exist any more…

You were active in the Boston music scene before you moved to New York. What has been the main difference between the two music communities? Are you still working with any artists in Boston?

The hip-hop scene in Boston is surprisingly strong, I would say the main difference between there and New York is exposure.  Boston isn’t the first city you think of when it comes to hip-hop, but there is definitely some real talent there.  At the moment, I’m working with an MC from up there called Pastense, we’re doing a project called Requiem for A Poet.  Real image-heavy stuff; don’t drive when you listen to this, it’s gonna zone you out.  I also have a joint in the works with a female MC/singer named Letia Larok.

As a producer, what albums do you hold up as stellar achievements in your field?

Damn, that’s a real tough one, cause I’m picky as shit.  All time, you gotta have your Illmatic’s and Cuban Linx’s and Soul Food’s and all that, that shit is the soundtrack to my childhood.  Currently, Black Milk is doing great stuff, and over the past few years, it doesn’t get much better than Madvillainy and Blu and Exile’s Below The Heavans.

I like the trailers but can you give us a better idea what is Heroes & Villains all about?

Ha, yeah the trailers are pretty cryptic.  That’s on purpose though, I like to make shit difficult.  The premise of Heroes & Villains is just the ultimate battle between good and evil.  He-Man vs. Baron Silas Greenback. (from Dangermouse)  I was a pretty big cartoon fan growing up, and this matchup seems like the obvious concept for a hip-hop album.  At least in my mind.  It’s 20 tracks of samples chopped over beats to tell the story of the battle.  The trailers set up the story, like why Greenback is battling He-Man instead of Dangermouse, and other pressing questions.  It will all make sense once all three trailers and the album are out.  Plus, the trailers include some beats not on the album, so they’re worth checking out just for that.

What else are you working on right now and do you have any projects you want to tell us about?

Well this is a real busy year for me, for sure.  The big event is the new Super Chron Flight Brothers album Cape Verde.  And I mean event.  I’ve been in the lab with Billy Woods and Privledge for about a year and a half on this one, and it’s a career ender.  I mean, anyone thinking they’re putting out real rap albums this year should dead their career.  After that, I got a lot of things lined up, this Pastense joint, plus albums with HiCoup, Masai Bey, Eleven, (of 11:00 AM) some Wu collaborations, and some top secret joints even my momma doesn’t know about yet.  I also have this electronic group out of New Haven, Kings, and that’s gonna be some whole different shit.  I stay real busy, I don’t sleep much.

What artist would you most like to work with on a full-length record?

Blu.  Dude needs to call or email me immediately, if not sooner.  I have a hard drive full of joints he’d sound crazy over, and right now they’re just marinating.  Blu – WillieGreenMusic@Gmail.com.  Seriously, get at me.  I’d also love to work with Ghostface, that dude can rap over anything, and I have some real out there shit that most cats just can’t hear.

Double CD: The first is a CD quality of the original album. The second is a through-the-looking-glass blend of album instrumentals and remixes by Backwoodz in-house maestro BOND, Nasa (Uncommon Music/Def Jux), Essex Dogs (logged production on Emergency Powers, Megagraphitti and Indonesia), Ravage (M.I.C.) and A.M. Breakups(of 11 A.M./Uncommon Music). All that and a bonus freestyle…plus a small pouch of rare enchanted gems that bestow their owner with mystical powers.!!! Just kidding. Not about the double CD thing though, that’s real.

Original Artwork by Ashes 57 and photos by Alexander Richter round out what we think is some of the best looking packaging we have put together for CD release…ever.

Last but not least, Autographed Copies are available if you order directly from us at Backwoodz, although we can only guarantee that it will be signed by at least one of the Flight Brothers since Marmaduke lives in Oakland, CA and Edge is currently residing in Philly again. We would have just had them sign a bunch but the CDs are so limited and some people might want a pristine copy considering how few are being printed.

Barring an investment by Warren Buffet or some of the ever elusive “Obama Money”, there will not be a repress. Once these hundred or so retail copies go, that is it. It is really just too cost prohibitive to print up small runs of double CDs and we all have sprawling country estates to keep out of foreclosure.

When questioned, the receptionist at the Panorama Guest House in Yogyakarta remembered the two “orang hitem” [black people] from America, quite easily. Although they only stayed for a couple weeks, the two men had drawn attention from the moment they arrived with a variety of electronics they said were for recording music. This claim appears to be borne out by the complaints lodged by other guests regarding the thumping bass at all hours of the day and a pungent aroma of high-grade marijuana, both emanating from their lodgings. Although both of the Americans were extremely polite when approached, they kept to themselves and were rarely seen in the common areas unless on a “liquor run”. The staff member could not recall the exact circumstances of the two brothers departure, but revealed that local plainclothes police arrived soon after, questioned her and searched the room. The management has since instituted an unwritten policy barring the renting of rooms to Negroes.

The Super Chron Flight Brothers are back for the first time since 2007’s dark horse of an LP, Emergency Powers. That record was heaped with critical acclaim; Allhiphop.com called it “daring graffitti”, Okayplayer said “one of the best underground releases of the year”, HipHop Connection magazine proclaimed Emergency Powers “A return to what intrigued about indie rap in the first place” and AllMusicGuide.com hailed it as “provocative, catchy…and an overall fantastic accomplishment”. Now the stoned siblings are back, and although Indonesia is less a follow-up to their debut than it is a side-project collaboration with Cali-based producer Marmaduke, it bangs just the same. Priviledge and Billy Woods took a break from working on Cape Verde, their forthcoming LP, to craft this experimental collage of hip-hop, dubstep and electronica. The production was primarily handled by Marmaduke [last seen lacing a couple bangers for Vordul Mega's latest LP, Megagraphitti], but also includes Nasa [Uncommon Music/Def Jux], Backwoodz in-house producers DR. MONOKROME & EssexDogs, and electro-dub impressario Teleseen [War]. And while their debut album boasted names like MF DOOM, Cannibal Ox, The Reavers and Trife da God, on Indonesia the Flight Brothers go for dolo on the mic…no features, just Super Chron!
