IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING...
Since 2002 we have been on an oft-delayed
mission here at backwoodz studioz, to punch a hole in the rap game big
enough for all of the talented cats we know to crawl through. We are not
there yet, but the hole is definitely a lot fucking bigger. So look and
listen your way around this site, read some interviews, wander through
the stacks and you might catch a contact.

Ironically, the follow up to Willie Green’s acclaimed …Of Heroes and Villains, (July ’09 – Backwoodz Studioz) Dirty Jordans is technically the prelude. Completed a year prior to the New England producer’s debut, Dirty Jordans was held back once the Flight Brothers started mining the instrumental album for beats. Created from ’07 – 08, Dirty Jordans is a 30 track instrumental companion piece to the Super Chron Flight Brothers upcoming LP, Cape Verde. The album includes a number of beats that also appear on Cape Verde, so Backwoodz Studioz will be releasing the projects one week apart with Jordans on June 15th and Cape Verde on the 22nd. A departure from the storyline concept of …Of Heroes and Villains, Dirty Jordans is a stream of consciousness project, a wide selection of beats with movie and television samples abound. The album features Green’s alter-ego Baron Silas Greenback, alter-alter-ego David Lopan, and a host of other “guests.”
Willie Green is based out of Brooklyn, NY and possesses an impressive production resume including Cannibal Ox, LuckyIAm, Reks, Naledge (of Kidz In The Hall), MarQ Spekt and many more. As in-house producer/engineer for Backwoodz Studioz, Green has a number of upcoming projects with the label, including a one MC/one producer project with New Jersey’s HiCoup titled Guerrilla Jones, production on the upcoming billy woods solo effort History Will Absolve Me, and work on New York based emcee Premonition’s debut The Build.

The Super Chron Flight Brothers new album, Cape Verde, is due in digital form on June 22 and CD on July 13th. We here at Backwoodz are really excited about the record, and apparently we are not the only ones. Check out the Village Voice interview where Billy Woods discusses “Reggie Miller” and the last album of the World Tour trilogy. But you know we would not hit up your inboxes if that was all we had to offer, producer Willie Green not only laced the beat of the single we are premiering right here, he also made a video. So, ladies and gentlemen, Backwoodz Studioz is proud to present….

We have really not come through with dope merch for our fans very often. Our excuse is that we have enough trouble getting these records out but this time, no excuses. Behold the first official Super Chron Flight Brothers T-shirts, commemorating the World Tour trilogy. This is a limited edition Super Chron Flight Brothers t-shirt, the first and only SCFB shirt available. Each shirt is hand printed and a unique, one-color print made by our friends at Wild Ponie. Six different colorways are available. Being that they are all handcrafted by the designer, the supply is HIGHLY limited Backwoodz staff and affiliates have already mooched about half of them, so you are forewarned to ACT NOW! Or something of the sort…
As far as Willie Green is concerned, it’s all about the drums. The New England-bred beatmaker puts that theory to the test on his debut album …Of Heroes & Villains, dropping on July 28th (today!) through Backwoodz Studioz. A half-hour instrumental adventure, …Of Heroes & Villains is the first official look at a producer who is poised to make a lot of noise in 2009 and beyond.
Willie Green made his name in the Boston underground scene as a producer and engineer before moving to Brooklyn in mid 2007. He has worked with unknowns and knows and soon-to-be-knowns alike, building up a resume of collaborators that includes Vordul of Cannibal Ox, Reks, the Super Chron Flight Brothers, Naledge of Kids in The Hall, Masai Bey and Boston fixtures Foundation Movement, among others. Shortly after Green began collaborating with the Super Chron Flight Brothers, Backwoodz Studioz was so impressed they invited him to take on some in-house production duties. As it stands, he co-produced the forthcoming Flight Brothers album, Cape Verde, and is hard at work on a one-producer/one-emcee project with Hi-Coup.
…Of Heroes & Villains is born out of Willie Green’s childhood love of cartoons. In his words, the premise of this instrumental narrative is “the ultimate battle between good and evil. He-Man vs. Dangermouse’s Baron Silas Greenback”. The album pairs Green’s agile beatmaking with a keen ear for samples pilfered from some of his favorite cartoons. As an extra bonus, Green has included two exclusive non-album tracks featuring billy woods of SCFB and Nasa of The Presence, respectively.

On July 28th, Backwoodz is releasing Willie Green’s instrumental album, Of Heroes & Villains… for free download! We have been talking about in-house producer Willie Green a lot recently, and with good reason. In the last year Green has provided stellar remixes for Vordul ["Imani Remix" for Megagraphitti] and the Super Chron Flight Brothers ["News & Notes Remix" on the deluxe hardcopies of Indonesia], as well as teaming up with BOND to produce the next Super Chron album, Cape Verde.
But before all that, Willie Green was making a name for himself in the Boston indie scene. So we included a short interview to get you more familiar with the man behind the beats and don’t forget to check out episode 2 of the trailer.

What is your music background?
As far as a “traditional” music background, I’ve played drums for the past 18 years, mostly funk, jazz and reggae, and went to a pretty prestigious music school for record production and engineering. I got my first drum machine and keyboard when I was 10 years old, I used to take two tape decks and record back and forth on them, adding layers to make beats. Hopefully those tapes don’t exist any more…
You were active in the Boston music scene before you moved to New York. What has been the main difference between the two music communities? Are you still working with any artists in Boston?
The hip-hop scene in Boston is surprisingly strong, I would say the main difference between there and New York is exposure. Boston isn’t the first city you think of when it comes to hip-hop, but there is definitely some real talent there. At the moment, I’m working with an MC from up there called Pastense, we’re doing a project called Requiem for A Poet. Real image-heavy stuff; don’t drive when you listen to this, it’s gonna zone you out. I also have a joint in the works with a female MC/singer named Letia Larok.
