Every release day is special, but even with all the great records we have put out so far, this drop feels a little sweeter. It’s not just because ShrapKnel is a homegrown project that we all took a chance on way back when, or because we’ve friends and collaborators since before the group was even an idea. To be real, not that long ago we didnt know if there was going to be another ShrapKnel album and we didn’t care because we were just praying for Castro to make it through what he had to get through. So when we say we at Backwoodz are proud of this record…we love all our kids, but being able to see this one walk across that graduation stage is very emotional. 

So, without further ado, here it is; Curly Castro and PremRock return after two solo journeys and a bevy of side projects to demonstrate their unique form and function. Metal Lung is ShrapKnel’s respiratory system. A living, breathing metallic organism, posing as a ‘hood, 4 street corners, and brutalist scrapers of sky, born to compete with Babel. The vast majority sonically constructed to scale by the tireless Steel Tipped Dove with some honorary foremanship by Child Actor and Olof Melander. In this metropolis spirits haunt ghost kitchens, flames burn both ways clean, and childhood fables are not spared when walking down a hot block.

An alloy is a mixture of chemical agents which forms a new substance that retains the characteristics of a metal. The mechanical properties of alloys often differ significantly from those of it’s individual constituents. It has been more than two years since ShrapKnel’s debut album, during which time the duo of Curly Castroand PremRock have individually released successful solo albums with Backwoodz Studioz. Fittingly, these two albums were nothing alike; Castro’s incendiary Little Robert Hutton is an high octane soundclash, a stark contrast to the knotty intimacy of PremRock’s Load Bearing Crow’s Feet. A new ShrapKnel album means a return to foundry and forge, the alchemy of turning two into one. Carbon and Iron make steel, rest assured, there will be no sophomore slump. Metal Lung is the evidence. The bulk is the production is provided by Steel Tipped Dove, who has worked with Nosaj, billy woods, SHIRT, R.A.P. Ferreira and just put out an incredible album of his own on Backwoodz last year (Call Me When You’re Outside). Additional production comes from Child Actor (ELUCID, Serengeti, Armand Hammer) & Olof Melander(Moor Mother, Project Mooncircle). Mixed and mastered by the incomparable Willie Green.
